Yoga is a heart-awakening path. The practice provides us with a method of self-actualization by creating physical openings in energetic-body centers, or chakras, to facilitate the fullest expression of body, psyche and soul. Yoga philosophy and spiritual anatomy suggests that the heart chakra, or Anahata, is the energetic seat of love, kindness and compassion. Yoga postures, or asanas, that awaken the heart chakra are backbends. Beyond awakening qualities of lovingkindness, yoga backbends energize the physical body, stimulate the nervous system, reduce low back pain, elevate the emotions and bring clarity of mind, clear vision, and an overall quality of openness and receptivity to our present-moment experience.
Courtney and John will guide you through a full yoga practice to prepare your body for a deep exploration of backbends. Abundant technical instruction will be provided to advance your practice in a fun, relaxing, and safe environment. The physical practice will occur within a larger energetic container of friendliness, kindness, community, and love.
Our journey will begin with a heart meditation that will invite you to explore what qualities and aspirations you would like to cultivate in your life. Our intention will be held and nourished through a heart-awakening Vinyasa practice that will open the entire body. The sequence will be specifically focused on key body regions supporting backbends. These regions include the quadriceps, thighs, knee joints, hips and hipflexors; the chest and shoulders, as well as the core.
