Our Mission is to be a solid resource for high risk youth navigating San Francisco's Juvenile Justice system. We use mindfulness-focused yoga to teach our students how to care for themselves. Stress and chronic pain are major aspects of their young lives. Our self-awareness focus encourages each youth to take the time to listen to their bodies and to work from there, taking one step at a time to change patterns and reactions. We integrate an ongoing life skills theme with their well-being in mind, ensuring that youth become stronger and healthier, both mentally and physically.
Lemonade is in a time of significant growth as an organization and also in class offerings. Our model is to be very consistent in programming and in team members, building our participation rate to a steady 85%. Last year we doubled our classes for all of the male youth population and started another set of classes at the adjunct treatment facility Log Cabin Ranch in La Honda. We teach nine weekly classes, reaching upwards of 60 youth twice each week. Our population is 85% Black, 10% Latino and 5% Other. To many people's surprise the youth enjoy yoga. One converted staff said, " I know why they like it, peace is addicting."
And we have fun doing it! Our programming is primarily asana and pranayama practice, letting the magic of yoga bring its restorative, curative, balancing, relaxing, and mindfulness affects into their lives during a time of serious distress.
